kllo is a collaboration between Melbourne cousins Chloe Kaul and Simon Lam. They first emerged in 2014 with a sound beyond their years; fully formed, fusing elements of R&B, UK garage, and 2-step with modern sensibilities and wide-eyed sincerity.
2017 brought Kllo's full-length debut, Backwater, a refined coming-of-age account that celebrates both ephemeral and enduring changes in emotion. Songs were written in part on the road and developed back in Melbourne at Lam's bungalow, a haven that fosters creative spontaneity and catharsis. With more room to breathe in the LP format, Kaul's smoky voice emanated assurance and leisure over brooding, steely undercurrents, hemmed by charming crescendos. The New York Times summed up the sound: “Euphoric, quick-stepping production, which bridges fiery garage and joyous disco.”
